I've Been Away...

I realized I've gotten away from writing for fun and writing to express myself. While I write and edit a lot for my job, I need to balance out the professional writing with some personal writing. Let's see how long this lasts :-).

There are several topics to comment on but I'll just go with today's major epic fail. For awhile now, I had plans to attend my youngest sister's commissioning ceremony. For the longest, I had it on my work calendar as this Monday, and I had taken the necessary measures to take time off and to be there. I'm excited for her that she's getting to experience this milestone in her life. Not only has she participated in various milestones of my own life (such as my Furman graduation), she has worked very hard to get to this point. In some ways, a lot of personal development has happened while she's been at Mercer, and this commissioning ceremony will be a marker to celebrate said development. I just hope she doesn't stop learning and growing... 'cause she's still a hot mess ;-).

I awoke this morning, prepared to pick up my rental car as the first step to seeing my sister. A few minutes prior to me jumping in the shower, I noticed something interesting on Facebook. My sister was in a reflective mood and had updated her status to talk about the upcoming commissioning ceremony. She specifically referenced the date and time and reminded her Facebook friends that the ceremony is set for WEDNESDAY.

Queue my "WHAT?!" face. Again, for the longest I was prepared to leave on Monday to see the ceremony and be a part of this moment when all along the real date was Wednesday. That just messed up everything. There's too much going on with work and other life stuff for me to switch around my Wednesday plans to go to Mercer. I wish I could.

While the moral of this story would be to always double-check your plans well in advance, the best message from this incident is the sense of understanding my sister has for my newfound predicament as well as the respect and pride she knows I have of her for finishing her degree and the litany of other accomplishments she has achieved during college. Plus, she'll see me at Christmas anyway ;-).

  1. I am proud of you for returning to blogging, but slightly more proud of your sister. Pass on a hearty America cheer.
